SAP3 Student Accommodation, University of the West of England (UWE)

Main Contractor: Vinci Construction

Client: UWE

F P Hurley was awarded the mechanical contract by Vinci Construction to deliver the SAP3 development for the University of the West of England in Bristol. The client’s brief reflected their tangible commitment to zero carbon, and the development will provide high-quality sustainable student accommodation to satisfy growing demand, and help create a greater sense of community for the university’s students.

The buildings, which will be located on the Frenchay Campus, will accommodate 900 bed spaces laid out across three buildings in four, six and eight bed clusters. The three buildings will be built to Passivhaus standards, providing a high level of user comfort whilst using very little energy for heating and cooling. The standout design eliminates the use of fossil fuels by utilising Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), Heat Recovery Air Handling Unit and Photovoltaics.

Heat Pump Installation

F P Hurley’s scope of works include the installation of 16 ASHPs across the three buildings. The team is installing sixteen 40kW ASHP units as part of the works, which are due to complete by September 2023. The ASHPs will be used for all hot water requirements throughout the buildings.
